The garden and the Roundhall

A garden with 22 symbols from the Major Arcana – the 22 great cards of the tarot – and a round hall, the Roundhall (Rundsalen), where we hold full moon concerts and retreats. This walk takes you through it in the order you would walk it yourself.

The gate

At the entrance stands the stump of Denmark's oldest beech, from the gardens of Fredensborg Palace, 1666–1999. This is where your walk begins.

The beech grew in the palace gardens for 333 years, and what is left of it is a wide stump, three metres tall. To its right is the green gate – the first card of the Major Arcana: 0, The Fool, who sets out on the journey.

Arriving

If you come by car, park on Slotsgade, 222 metres away, and walk in through the green gate to the right of the stump. The address is Kronprinsessevej 11, 3480 Fredensborg. By train, it is about 15 minutes on foot from Fredensborg Station.

From the gate, the path climbs up through the garden. Along it, the 22 cards of the Major Arcana take shape as figures, rooms and sculptures – from card 0, The Fool, at the gate, to card XXI, The World, in the Roundhall.

Three of them:

  • IIThe High PriestessThe lake, with branches going off to smaller lakes and waterfalls.
  • VIIIStrengthThe Portal, a large gate supported by two pillars with carved power animals.
  • IXThe HermitThe Path of the Hermit, leading to the Wizard's Tower and the Subterranean Meditation Chamber.

Jacob explains what each place in the garden means

Before you enter the Roundhall, you pass through the foyer – card VI, The Lovers. Jacob calls the entrance to the studio the heart of the place, because it connects the inner and the outer space.

The Roundhall

At eye level: a round wooden floor, carved pillars and the instruments along the wall.

Look up: the ceiling beams meet in a single point above the centre, with small lights like stars.

Seen from above, the building – Axis Mundi Studio – is shaped like a key, on a ground plan of exactly 123.4 m². The Roundhall is the last card: XXI, The World.

What happens here

Every month, at the full moon, Jacob and Ecaterina play a concert of about 1¼ hours here as Axis Mundi Experience. You sit or lie down – and with your presence you help create the music, which is made in the moment.

On a retreat, the Roundhall is where the ceremony takes place. You lie on your own mattress and travel inward to live music, and an experienced guide is always close by to help you.

How it began

Jacob Moth began building the garden in 1995, after a vision. 22 years later, in 2017, all 22 cards stood finished. Every stop on the way was made for the same reason: so that, step by step, you can come closer to your own heart – and to the answers only you can find.
